Try putting a cardboard box outside with some fluffy towels in it. Make sure there is a spot for him to nestle in. Then put the cat in the box so it gets the idea. Make sure the cat can easily walk in and out of it. If it has to jump in it might be too afraid to settle in. Make sure the cat has a pretty full stomach before you put him in or it might climb right out looking for food and then forget about it later. Good luck!
