What's the difference between centerfire and rimfire cartridges?

The rimfire case has a hollow rim with primming compound inside the hollow. The fireing pin pinches the compound between the rim and ingnites the propellent. The centerfire cartridge has a self contained primer in the center of the cartridge base.
